Researching and Analysing Intelligence

Researching and analysing intelligence;
 In this stage of the investigation, the investigation will look at other crimes in he community that might be of relevance to this crime and try to make links which could lead to possible suspects being identified. This looks at who is committing crime in the area. From this the investigation team will look for links and come up with assessments of possible suspects which will be investigated further.

Researching and analysing intelligence is important in the investigation process because if the police do not have any leads for the crime, they can sue research of crimes in the community and research of crime committers in the area and make possible links that they may be involved in the crime. This can lead the police to interview any suspects of other related crimes which may lead to a guilty prosecution.

This stage in the Madeleine McCann case was an important stage. Police officers looked into abduction cases in the Praia Da Luz community of where Madeleine went missing. A main link the police made was of a Swiss paedophile who was implicated of the murder of a 5year old girl, Yliena Lenhard in Switzerland, 3 months after Madeleine’s disappearance. Von Aesch (convicted paedophile) was living in Spain of the time of Madeleine’s disappearance. He committed suicide the day after Yliena’s disappearance. Other suspect sightings have been brought up in witness statements conducting impressions of an abductor.

This stage was successful to the police in identifying a possible lead of a suspect. Although it was successful in identifying a suspect, it was unsuccessful in finding any evidence that this suspect had involvement with Madeleine's disappearance. Analysing witness statements has also enabled the police to look at suspect sightings, these can be used as leads to the lead to look into possible abductors.
